Medicinal plants from sub-Saharan Africa contain a variety of bioactive secondary metabolites. Among these metabolites, researchers in sub-Saharan Africa study some of them less because the procedures for obtaining them appear more complex. This is the case for indole alkaloids, carbazoles, and saponosides, whose isolation and characterization require the use of specific experimental methods. The interest in these classes of molecules lies in the fact that they exhibit a range of biological activities beneficial to humans. In this chapter, the authors describe the different experimental approaches used over the last 10 years by researchers in sub-Saharan Africa for the phytochemical study of indole alkaloids, carbazoles, and saponosides. In addition, the biological activities of the different molecules obtained during this period are presented as well as some recommendations for improving the isolation equipment for these classes of molecules that are already available.
