Novel frequency selective structure reflector (FSSR) microstrip monopole patch antenna (RA) for IEEE802.15.6 standard dedicated to wireless body area network (WBAN) application is designed. The designed single antenna (SA), consists of a right angle truncated rhombus-shaped ring microstrip square patch with a degraded ground structure (DGS). The unit-cell FSS proposed achieves ultra-wide stopband feature. The studied FSSR of area 55.5×55.5 mm2implemented to improve SA radiation characteristics (such as gain and front-to-back ratio). The novel RA is designed on a thin low loss Rogers RO3003 substrate material and numerically investigated using CST microwave studio suite. The proposed RA prototype is numerically tested in two distinct operating situations; in the free-space and on the human-body. When RA is attached to a human body, 50.7% of a fractional impedance bandwidth (FIBW), a peak gain of 8.7 dBi and a front-to-back ratio of 27.11 dB were achieved at a resonant frequency of 5.8 GHz. Excellent specific absorption rate (SAR) values obtained are in good agreement with the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) requirements.
